The best holiday gift ideas for avid gamers in 2017

Alexis Rearick-Staff Writer

With the Christmas season approaching, the holiday of giving is back, and more people are going to want today’s hottest technologies and games. This year was great for new games, and even further consoles, especially that of the Xbox One X, the latest versions of the 3DS, the Nintendo Switch and also the SNES Classic Edition.

With all the new systems, many games were released, each ranged in their level of creativeness, difficulty, and even new remasters are in the works. There are games for everyone. Many of them have unique places in people’s hearts, and next year’s lineup of games also looks promising, such as “The Last of Us 2”, “Red Dead Redemption 2, “ and “Far Cry 5.” Yet 2017 is not over, but this year’s holiday lineup is promising.

The first game that is a must this year is the Xbox One exclusive “Cuphead,” for people want a significant challenge. “Cuphead” is a unique game because it has characters that were drawn in the 1930’s style of cartoon. The game was all drawn by hand in a motion called “rubber hose animation.” The game is one where concentration is critical, and the goal is to keep shooting because the boss battles will throw everything at gamers. There is a lot of beautiful animation and it is an excellent challenge for any fan. “Cuphead” came out on Sept. 29, 2017, and is rated E 10+ for fantasy violence, mild language and use of alcohol and tobacco. It is $20 to purchase.

The second game on the list is “South Park: The Fractured but Whole.” It was reviewed in the newspaper before, and it is an excellent game about being a superhero in the town of South Park Colorado, while Coon and Friends fights against the Freedom Pals to figure out who has the better franchise. Gamers also get to find out the past of the mysterious new kid who showed up in “South Park the Stick of Truth.” It is rated M for blood, gore, mature humor, nudity, strong language, use of drugs, violence, and sexual content. It is available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One for $59.99 standard edition and $99.99 for the gold edition.

The third game on the list is “Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon.” Who does not love Pokemon? The new editions of Sun and Moon brought new features, new Pokemon, and surprisingly a similar story to their first game. Trainers can catch more Pokemon and become the champion as they battle to become the Alohan Champion. The game came out on Nov. 17, 2017, and is only for the 3DS and 2DS.

The newest console is the Nintendo Switch. Who does not love the “Legend of Zelda”? This year released the newest game for the Switch of the “Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild.” The game is unlike other Zelda games, as players get new surprises, creative and beautiful scenery, and brought forth new puzzles, and unlike the other Zelda games. This one is probably the best Zelda to date, and more people now have the chance to play.

Super Mario Odyssey launched in October too and sold faster than any Mario title ever in the United States.

A good game for the PlayStation 4, is the remastered version of “Crash Bandicoot: The N Sane Trilogy” released remasters of Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2 Cortex Strikes Back, and Crash Bandicoot Warped. They were a bit difficult than their originals, and have been remastered, with better mechanics and 3D models. Crash Bandicoot was initially on the original PlayStation and was remastered in 2017.

This year has been full of high standards for games. Many great ones came out this year, and there are many still to come. From Okami HD to “Life is Strange Before the Storm” episode three, to others. As people go and get games of the holidays, consider picking up something new and play it.
