Service summit approaches

CLARION, Pa.- Clarion University’s Advisory Board for Leadership and Engagement (ABLE) encouraged students and the community to attend its third annual Service Summit from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 4 in the Suites on Main South.

This year’s theme is “We the People, Be the People.”

Every year, ABLE holds the summit to help students build confidence by engaging in community issues, networking around what the community issues are and seeing what can be done to address the issues.

Guests will learn how to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, grow their understanding of diverse cultures and communities and learn more about social issues and their root causes. This year, they will be working toward finding common ground and taking action in times of adversity.

The 2016 presidential election inspired this year’s theme choice.

“We felt that it was important to get people to stand up and get involved,” said Torron Mollett, ABLE student and head chair of the Service Summit conference. “We felt that it wasn’t always good to just rely on the government when it came to stuff, therefore if we all came together as one, we can make a change.”

ABLE first started holding the summits in 2015.

“We felt the Service Summit was important for Clarion’s campus because, as a university, we wanted to inspire others to serve the community of Clarion,” stated Mollett.

“Service is most definitely rewarding,” Mollett said. “Service is fun and it can make a difference in many people’s lives. Plus, by showing our communities what we do for them, wecan bring in more people to accomplish more. By doing more, we can enhance and better our world for our children and our children’s children.”

A dinner with beef, chicken or a vegetarian option will be served after the summit. Clarion University students can register by logging on to cuconnect.clarion.edu.

Guests can register up until the day of the event. Community members and students may contact able@clarion.edu for any registering questions. Free parking will be available in the lots behind the Suites on Main.
