The Video Music Awards and American Music Awards may feature memorable performances, but the Grammy Award stage is the most legendary for an artist to be able to step foot on, whether it’s winning the famous Gramophone Award or performing. Being nominated for a Grammy is the equivalent to an actor/actress being nominated for an Oscar. When it comes to being nominated, your material must be submitted or released by the beginning of the fall season. New albums from artists like Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, Frank Ocean Solange Knowles are not eligible until next year’s wave of voting after the 2017 show. On Tuesday Dec 7, fans like me were screaming with excitement because the Grammy nominations had been released earlier that day. Many may agree that 2016 has been the best year for music, with popular hits from pop and hip hop genres. Adele: After an amazing return to music, with the album 25 and a world tour this past year, the time has come to reward the singer with the awards that she deserves. Adele will be returning to the Grammys in 2017 with nominations including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. She has major competition in those fields against some of the best artists in the world, but deserves at least one trophy for her intimate and raw pop album.
Justin Bieber: Just like Adele, Justin Bieber has returned this past year with new music after some time off, but never from the paparazzi. Instead of a headline about who Bieber is dating, the Grammys are the perfect way to put him in a positive light. Justin won his first Grammy last year for his collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex on “Where Are U Now?”, and now is nominated for the most awards at this show. His multi-platinum Purpose album is now nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album while his mega hit “Love Yourself” is up for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. This has been deemed as Justin’s best music in years and he deserves some recognition. Good luck Biebs!
Chance the Rapper: Saying that 2016 has been a big year for Chancellor Johnath would be quite the understatement. Mr. Chance has been known as the biggest rising rapper of the year for his praised unique album Coloring Book, which is only available to stream because he does not believe in the need to earn commission from his music. The Recording Academy thankfully opened its rules of eligibility to digital albums now which means the rapper has made history. Chance received a whopping seven nominations on Tuesday including, Best New Artist and Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album. This artist deserves major recognition for his positive vibes and artistic ways that he shows to the world.
Demi Lovato: After eigh years of winning hearts and praise from millions of fans in the pop world, Demi Lovato has finally received her first ever Grammy Nomination. 2015 marked a key change in the singer’s career by showing off mature adult material compared to her past records that used to be produced by Disney. Her fifth studio album Confident has now earned the nomination of Best Pop Vocal Album and I think Demi has quite the chance at winning. She has deserved a Grammy ever since she was one of the biggest highlights of 2016’s show for her performance in the Lionel Ritchie medley.
Rihanna: The Barbados pop princess will hopefully be going home in February with a new shiny award after receiving eight nominations for her new material from the album Anti including hits “Work”, “Needed Me”, and “Kiss it Better” which are all nominated in different categories. Even though the singer did not receive an album of the year nomination, she did receive Best Urban Contemporary Album, which is an award she has won in the past.
Beyonce: Queen Bey is about to be the ultimate highlight of the Grammys gaining the most nominations out of any other nominee with nine awards. The singer has proven 2016 was the year of Beyonce for her mega praised visual album Lemonade, and supporting the record with a huge world tour that I managed to witness in Pittsburgh this past summer. Lemonade managed to be nominated for Album of The Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album ,containing the hit single “Formation” which got nominated for Song and Record of the Year. People have been sad since she lost in 2015 for Album of the Year so lets cross our fingers a little harder in February!
Maren Morris: If you haven’t heard of Morris Morris, then you should do some listening next time you’re streaming because the she is worth your time. Morris has been spending the past year gaining many fans praise in the country world with her first major studio album Hero which feature hit single My Church and has recently been crowned New Artist of the Year at the 2016 CMAs. Morris and her beautiful voice have gained her first wave of Grammy nominations like Best New Artist and Best Country Album. If you are like me and haven’t been into country since Taylor Swift roamed the country stations, get back into the mood because Maren is unique and very talented.
