A student’s short story: The Boy and His Dogs Part V

After their meeting with Dr. Green, Richard and Sam were still dumbfounded over what they had heard.

They walked into the meeting expecting different news than what they had heard. Instead of their son being diagnosed with a learning disability, they come to find out that he is, in fact, a genius.

The ride home was mostly silent until Richard finally spoke up. “What should we do now,” said Richard. “Simple, we tell Charles about the results of the test,” Sam replied.

Richard sighs. “That makes sense, but what I don’t understand is why he has been doing so poorly in school,” said Richard.  “The only thing I can think of is that it’s so easy for him that he just doesn’t do it,” said Sam.

There is silence for a few seconds and then Richard finally says, “I feel like it is something else, but I just can’t put my finger on it.”

Richard and Sam walked into the house and noticed that all of the boys were home. The girls wouldn’t be home for at least another hour.

As usual, the twins were upstairs playing video games as the eldest, Tom, was in the lounge doing homework, which he usually does for several hours every night.

They both walk into the living room and see Charles sitting on the couch watching TV, Lincoln and George laying on the floor in front of the couch.

Richard looks to Sam and asks, “What should we do?” Sam says they shouldn’t do anything out of the ordinary, just to sit down and ask Charles about his day. They are planning to tell him about the results from the test.

They both sit down and start a casual conversation with Charles, then after a few minutes Sam brings up that they have the results back from the test that he took.

Almost immediately, Charles shut off the TV and looked at his mother. “What did the results say,” Charles asked. Sam looked back at Richard and then looked back at Charles.

After a brief pause she proceeded to tell her son that he, in fact, does not have any kind of learning disability, but is actually a genius.

There was once again a brief pause and then Charles very calmly said, “I know, I have known for quite a while that I was more gifted than all of my friends and classmates. Though I also knew that if I came right out and said anything that you wouldn’t believe me.”

Richard and Sam share a blank stare, looking dumbfounded. They can not believe what they had just heard.

Richard asks,“So this was a plan from the very beginning? You stop doing your work and make it seem like you’re having trouble so you would have to take this test that would give us proof that you were actually a genius?” Charles replies, “No, that is not it at all.”
