It’s been five whole years since the Red Hot Chili Peppers have released the album I’m With You. On June 17th, they finally released another album, called The Getaway. It contains 13 songs and is their 11th studio album..
The band has been around for a little over 30 years. They still sound like they always have, but that is definitely not a bad thing. Anthony Kiedis, who is 53 years of age, still has his classic voice, and Flea still slaps the bass like he always has. The band has had such a unique, funky sound to most of their songs and it’s something that never gets old. They create songs that are so enjoyable to sing along with. Anyone who has heard at least one of their songs knows what I’m talking about. There’s nothing that can replace them. It’s clear that they take their line of work seriously.
The Getaway’s first single “Dark Necessities” is arguably the most popular song on the album. Listening to the lyrics, I’ve realized that it’s a song that holds a lot of meaning. Kiedis speaks a lot about his past drug addiction, and states that people who aren’t addicts don’t understand the mindset of an addict. This can apply to a lot of things. It basically explains that people shouldn’t judge anyone because they don’t know what it’s like to be in their position. Not only that, but lyrics such as “Dark necessities are part of my design” explains that we all have a good and a bad side. It’s just how all of us humans are. The other tracks are full of different meanings and stories that I found to be quite enjoyable.
After listening to this album, I felt very accomplished. It wasn’t a waste of my time listening to it. Being in a band for over 30 years, it must not have been easy making such a comeback, especially with the way music has been changing nowadays.
