It has been one year since former One Direction member Zayn Malik left the successful group when it was at its highest peak.
Since leaving, Malik signed a recording contract with RCA Records, and his engagement with Little Mix member Perrie Edwards ended. Backlash and hate has been thrown toward Malik’s choice to go solo, but much love has been shown for his first single “Pillow Talk.” Malik’s debut album “Mind of Mine” was released a week ago and earned the No. 1 spot in 70 countries. The singer is bound to have a big year ahead of him.
The R&B song “Drunk” has a Justin Timberlake vibe throughout the chorus, and it is a funny coincidence that Timberlake left NSYNC to go solo. The thought of summer is felt throughout this slow jam.
Next off Malik’s album is the sexy duet “Wrong” featuring rising urban/R&B singer Kehlani. This is one of the best duets pop fans will hear this year. The two singers belt out lyrics about their lovers not being on the same level as them while hinting at a dying relationship. The vocals of these two are perfectly in sync.
“Like I Would” is the third single released off the record. It is bound to be Malik’s next big hit with its fast dance club beats. Malik sings about how no one can love his lover (Gigi Hadid) like he can. The song has been getting universal acclaim and soaring on the pop charts.
The second released single, “It’s You,” is rumored to be about ex-fiancé Perrie Edwards and their highly profiled fallout. Malik has finally decided to break his silence and show his true feelings regarding his side of the story. The soft and high vocals are beautiful in this slow ballad.
Fans of 1D and Malik may feel conflicted since “Mind of Mine” has slower R&B tracks, but they are both great artists. I give Malik props for bearing through the pressure and drama that he is dealing with while trying to get his music into the world. “Mind of Mine” is a truly great album with quality material.
