On April 21-24, Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be showing at the University Student Theatre located in the Suites on Main North. These showings will be free to students, $4 for adult tickets and $2 for children under 12 years old.
“The Force Awakens” was released in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. It stars Harrison Ford, Adarm Driver, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, and is directed by J.J. Abrams.
It became the highest grossing domestic film at over $9 billion, according to boxofficemojo.com. “The Force Awakens” was nominated for five Academy Awards.
This film is the seventh installment in the saga that began in 1977 with what is now “Episode IV: A New Hope,” but was released eponymously as “Star Wars.” “A New Hope” won six of 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for in 1978.
“A New Hope” was followed by “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) and “The Return of the Jedi” (1983). These became Episodes V and VI, respectively, with Lucasfilm’s prequel trilogy, “The Phantom Menace” (1999), “The Attack of the Clones” (2002) and “The Revenge of the Sith” (2005). These are respectively labeled Episodes I, II and III.
The original six movies were produced by Lucasfilm, the company of Star Wars creator and director, George Lucas. In 2012, Disney bought Lucasfilm from Lucas for $4 billion and have been behind the continuation of the “Star Wars” saga. According to cinemablend.com, Disney will add another film addition to “Star Wars” each December from 2016-2020, or as consequencesofsound.net states: “Disney plans to release a new Star Wars film every year until you die.”
Walt Disney World and Disneyland are adding “Star Wars” rides to their theme parks. Star Wars characters were included in the New Year’s Day float for the Rose Bowl parade.
This series has had an active fan base since its conception. There have been countless spin-off novels, clothing items, video games, toys and jewelry. COVERGIRL has released a line of “Star Wars” makeup for “The Force Awakens.”
Cartoon Network aired new episodes of the children’s animated TV show, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” from 2009-2014, set between Episodes II and III. Disney XD began airing its “Star Wars Rebels” TV series for children in 2014. The events of “Star Wars Rebels” take place between Episodes III and IV.
