Delval throws shutout in win over IUP

This past weekend, the Clarion Golden Eagle baseball team took on the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a four- game series.

The first two games of the weekend were played on Friday at Clarion’s home field, where the two teams split the series 1-1.

The highlight of Clarion’s win came with pitcher Tyler Delval throwing a complete game shutout, with a score of 5-0, over the course of seven innings.

Delval also prevented IUP from having any baserunners until there were two outs during the fourth inning.

During the remainder of the game, Delval sat down the majority of the IUP batters, except for allowing one other single.

He also went 1-2 at the plate during the first game.

During those at-bats, Delval gave Clarion one run and an RBI

However, other Golden Eagles also drove in runs over the course of the 5-0 victory.

Tyler Falk had an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to drive in Josh Ponsoll.

This gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

The next two runs came after John Finke hit a two-run single to increase Clarion’s lead to 3-0.

Also, Matt Kamenicky drove in Mike Lockhart with an RBI single for Clarion’s fourth run of the game.

Clarion’s final run came in the fifth inning when Austin Mike hit in Lockhart with an RBI single.

The second game of the day resulted in the Golden Eagles falling to Crimson Hawks by a score of 7-6.

IUP opened up the game with a 5-0 lead after one inning of play.

However, the Golden Eagles attempted to complete the comeback after scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

One of the runs came from Mitch Holmberg being driven in by Delval after an error by the IUP third baseman.

Then, Falk hit in the remaining two baserunners with a two-run double to shorten the Crimson Hawks lead to 5-3.

After IUP added on two more runs, the score became 7-3 in favor of the Crimson Hawks.

This was until Delval hit a solo home run, followed by a Falk RBI in the sixth inning. 

The last run in Clarion’s 7-6 loss to IUP came from a solo home run by Finke.

The second two games were played in Indiana, Pa, where the Golden Eagles would fall in both against the Crimson Hawks.

The two losses resulted in scores of 6-2 and 7-6.

Lockhart had two RBIs in those two games, one being a solo home run. Mason McGuire also had a home run in the fifth inning of the second game.

Another highlight in the games at IUP included Falk going 2-4 in game two on Saturday with an RBI.

At one point during the second game on Saturday, Clarion had a 6-4 lead after throwing errors and walked in runs by the Crimson Hawks.

However, IUP scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

The highlight of Clarion’s weekend came from Delval’s performance on the mound earning him PSAC West Co-Pitcher of the Week.

Clarion hits the road Friday, April 2 for a doubleheader against the Mercyhurst Lakers.
