On Oct. 20, 14 students from Clarion University’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter and the American Advertising Federation Student Chapter traveled to the 2015 Tri-State PRSA Conference, “Thinking Differently about PR” at New York University in New York City.
The PRSSA students were: Brandan Brooks, Chris Holmes, Nicole Hrip, Casey McCauley, Samantha McKain, Tyree Mitchell, and Kara Sorenson.
The Advertising Federation students were: Nina Jonnet, Danielle Nespor, Chiaki Okuyama, Gloria Pytlak, Jay Sager, Jasmine Waugh, and Tracy Willits.
Students attended eight sessions including, “Changing the Landscape of PR” and “Crisis Communications in a Multi-Stakeholder Environment.”
They learned about how the public relations process works in industry and how award-winning campaigns are produced.
They also made career connections with agency and corporate employers, and participated in student breakout sessions on career networking.
Speakers at the NYU conference included: Lisa Kovitz, senior vice president, Edelman; Cheryll Forsatz, New York region communications director, McDonalds; Jess Sheehan, vice president of Communications, JP Morgan Chase; and Hugo Balta, director of Multicultural Content, ESPN.
“The 2015 Tri-State Conference in New York City was an invaluable experience for every student that attended,” said Kara Sorenson, Clarion’s PRSSA president.
“We were able to immerse ourselves in a professional setting that provided us with information that helped us understand the changing dynamic of public relations and how best to prepare for our careers following graduation.”
PRSSA and the American Advertising Federation Student Chapter are nationally sponsored groups and Recognized Student Organizations at Clarion University.
Members learn about the public relations and advertising fields from professionals, participate in national conferences and competitions, and network for internship and career opportunities. Membership in both clubs is open to all Clarion students.
