Golden Eagle volleyball picks up first win of year at Vulcan Volleyball Invitational

The Clarion University Women’s Volleyball team traveled to California University of Pennsylvania this past weekend to take part in the Vulcan Volleyball Invitational.

The team dropped matches against Saginaw Valley State and Bridgeport on Friday, Sept. 11.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the team lost to Truman State and defeated Fairmont State for the first victory of the season.

In the first match of the weekend, Clarion got swept 3-0 by Saginaw Valley by scores of 25-18, 26-24, and 25-18.

Libero Morgan Seybold tallied eight digs, while right side hitter Mackenzie Biggs and middle hitter Gabrielle Olsen chipped in eight kills each.

Setter Kaley Pittsley led the team in assists during the match with 26.

In the second match, the Golden Eagles fell 3-1 to the Purple Knights of Bridgeport.

Clarion started the match off on a high note winning the opening set 25-19, but suffered losses in the following three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 28-26.

Multiple Golden Eagles concluded the match with season highs.

Pittsley ended the match with a season high 41 assists, while Olsen’s final stat line included a season high 17 kills.

Outside hitter Catherine Ferragonio led the team in digs with a total of 18.

Although the team lost its first two matches of the tournament, Biggs thought the team did well in certain aspects of the game.

Biggs stated, “Our energy improved, and we managed the game better defensively by hustling to every ball and offensively we improved by being aggressive at the net and putting the ball in good areas.”

The Clarion women’s volleyball team lost its first match on Saturday to Truman State 3-1.

The Golden Eagles won the third set of the match by a score of 25-18, but dropped the first, second, and fourth sets to the Bulldogs by scores of 25-14, 25-15, and 26-24.

Pittsley recorded 32 assists, while outside hitter Taylor Braunagel had 11 kills. Seybold led the team in digs with a total of 14.

Clarion’s final match of the tournament yielded the team’s first victory of the season.

The Golden Eagles defeated the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons 3-1.

Clarion lost the opening set of the match by a score of 25-19, but regrouped to win the next three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-16.

In the victory, the team was led by Pittsley who recorded 45 assists and eight assists, and Braunagel who finished with 17 kills.

Seybold and outside hitter Marissa Robertson also contributed to the win.

Seybold finished with 24 digs and five assists, while Robertson tallied 16 kills and seven digs.

Although the team has started off slow in regard of the win-loss column, Head Volleyball Coach Jennifer Mills believes playing a stronger pre-season schedule will help the team in the long run.vball 2

Mills states, “I think we’ve learned some valuable information by playing a stronger preseason schedule. This past weekend we started to find some consistency and also began to really focus on finishing a set when things were close.”
