Clarion student Joseph Bucci is directing and producing a film called “The Painter.”
Bucci first started making movies when he was 14 years old. His first movie, a ’Twilight’ spoof, was called “Evening Gloom.”
“I watched it the other day and thought to myself, how did I ever think this was good?” Bucci said.
Bucci also said that he got into film making by accident. He was supposed to take an ROTC class but got put into a video production class by mistake. He said he fell in love with it.
“The Painter” is about a young artist named Iris and a young acting student named Lily. Iris is trying to complete his masterpiece, “The Monomyth,” but he cannot do it sober. Every time he tries to paint sober it turns out horrible, so he uses heroin. When he meets Lily, he wants to paint sober for her. Iris says, “I want to be the hero in these paintings, and Lily is the reason why.” He struggles with his addiction and his need to finish the paintings throughout the film, while the relationship of the two goes through hell and back, according to Bucci.
Two Clarion students will be acting in the movie. Maria Fazio will play a character named Schmidt, and Gabby Kashner will play Julie. Though they are playing supporting roles, Bucci said that they are key to the storyline.
Bucci said he is having a blast making the movie, and it really doesn’t feel like work. He said this proves to him that he wants to work in film.
Preproduction for the movie started back in July, and he has put over 100 hours into the film already. He is unsure how many more hours will be put into it.
“All I can say is, I will enjoy every second of it,” Bucci said.
Bucci has made about seven short films. He was hired to direct a feature film last spring, but the funding fell through. Bucci plans on taking “The Painter” to as many major film festivals as he possibly can and winning an award for this film at all of them.
“I am extremely confident in this film,” Bucci said. “The cast and crew are absolutely amazing.”
