Gannon spoils Clarion’s homecoming game for second consecutive year

Homecoming has not been kind to Clarion for the past two years now, no thanks to the Gannon Golden Knights.

For the second year in a row, the Golden Eagles fell to Gannon, this year 33-7.

The homecoming game took place over Autumn Leaf Festival weekend, as always, and there was quite a crowd on hand, not to mention the game was aired live online through ESPN3.

The game started close as Gannon went out to a 3-0 lead, then the Golden Eagles came back with a touchdown drive of their own.

Leading the way was new starting quarterback sophomore Connor Simmons with his seven-yard touchdown run, which turned out to be the only Clarion points of the game.

The Golden Eagles did keep it close in the first half as the teams went into the locker room with the Golden Knights leading 10-7.

The second half was a very different story though as Gannon ripped off 23 unanswered points.

The momentum of the game really changed after an 11-play Golden Knight drive shortly after halftime that encompassed 80 total yards and was capped off by 21-yard touchdown pass from Liam Nadler to Brend online

Late in the third quarter another backbreaking drive was made by Gannon that went 74 yards in five minutes.

Nadler had a one-yard rushing score to put his team up 23-7.

After that drive Gannon didn’t look back as it capped off the game with 10 more points in the fourth quarter for the final score of 33-7.

The Golden Knights advanced to 4-0 on the year as Clarion fell to 2-2.

Through the air Simmons had seven completions for 96 yards and an interception and on the ground, senior Bobby Thomas rushed for 42 yards on eight carries while freshman Delrece Williams had 38 yards on nine carries.

On the defensive side of the ball the Golden Eagles were lead by senior Matt Shuey (eight tackles, one sack) and junior Cody McNamara (eight hits).

Gannon was led to victory by a strong day from its quarterback Nadler who accounted for four touchdowns (one passing, three rushing).

Clarion now sits at fifth in the PSAC West while Gannon still rests a top of the standings at number one.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action this Saturday at to face the 0-4 Mercyhurst Lakers.

The game will again be aired on ESPN3.

Kick off is slated for 1 p.m.
