Golden Eagle Football comes alive in second half, propels past Cheyney

Clarion Golden Eagles Football took home the win Saturday defeating the Cheyney Wolves 27-6 on the road.
With the victory the Golden Eagles increased their record to 2-1 going into their home opener against the Gannon Golden Knights.
Defense was the story to the first half of the matchup.
The Golden Eagles and Cheyney Wolves went into their respective locker rooms pitching a shutout effort.
In the first half, Clarion went for a fourth down conversion three times and were stopped short on all three.
Clarion came out offensively in the second half scoring on its first possession on nine plays.
Sophomore Connor Simmons ran in the ball from five yards out on the ninth play.
The Golden Eagles took over with five minutes of the clock off the board.
Sophomore Scott Ayers filling in for Phil Esposito missed the extra point giving Clarion the 6-0 lead, which would hold for the remaining of the third quarter.
On Clarion’s first drive in the fourth quarter the Golden Eagles got back on the scoreboard.
Freshman Delrece Williams took the ball in from the two yard line after back-to-back penalties on Cheyney.
Ayres knocked through the field goal giving Clarion the 13-0 lead.
Clarion scored two more times in the quarter on a 12-yard pass from Simmons to junior Mark Nicholas.
Williams finished for the Eagles with another TD run.
Ayers made both extra points to give Clarion the 27-0 lead.
Clarion gave up its only points in the final Cheyney possession after Mike Campbell finished the Cheyney drive with a one yard touchdown run.
The Golden Eagles, with the victory, are tied atop the PSAC Western Division with Slippery Rock and Gannon.
These three teams are all 2-0 in the conference with Clarion and Gannon facing off this weekend.
“It was collectively a team effort,” said junior defensive tackle Kwame Bell. “We got a jolt from the defense, and once the offense got the ball we capitalized. We were able to score and get the momentum and finish strong. At the end of the day, it’s going to take a team to win.”
Stats wise the Golden Eagles finished the game with 20 first downs while only allowing Cheyney 12.
Clarion rushed for 143 yards and threw for 220 for a total of 363 net yards gained.
Cheyney finished with 96 yards rushing and 130 passing for a total of 226 yards.
Simmons finished the game 12-17 passing with 196 yards, a touchdown pass, and a touchdown rush.
Williams ran 18 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns.
Nicholas had four receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown. Matt Lehman caught three passes for 91 yards, his longest 45.
On the defensive side of the ball, senior Julian Howsare finished with six tackles, three assists and a sack.
Bell finished with six tackles, one assists, two sacks, and forced a fumble.
The Golden Eagles take the field Saturday in a battle of first place PSAC West teams as the Golden Knights of Gannon visit for homecoming.
“We’re excited,” said Bell. “We want to play at home, we want to get a win for our team, Clarion. There’s going to be a lot of energy.”
Last season, the Knights defeated Clarion 45-25 on homecoming weekend..
