Clarion softball sweeps Slippery Rock, captures first series win in three years

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]This past week the Clarion Golden Eagles softball team took on Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a doubleheader.
In game one, starting pitcher freshman Paige Baker pitched a scoreless outing throwing five innings and allowing just two hits.
In the sixth, Baker allowed two runs on three hits including back to back doubles.
Junior Shawnna Crago came on in relief in the seventh inning allowing four runs while only one was an earned run.
Clarion dropped the first game 6-0.
In game two of the double header, freshman Lyndsey Jones pitched all seven innings allowing 10 runs seven earned on 17 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Sophomore second baseman Ashley Barenchik went 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
Junior first baseman Taylor Powell went 1-3 with a single and an RBI as the Golden Eagles fell in the second game 10-1.
The team hosted Slippery Rock last Saturday for a doubleheader.
In the first game, Crago pitched all 10 innings of the contest allowing just three hits, a walk and with a career high 13 strikeouts.
The 13 strikeouts by Crago is the most by a Golden Eagle since April Shannon had 14 at Edinboro on April 9, 2004.
Head Coach Shintrika Hudson was pleased with  Cargo’s performance Saturday.
“She hit her spots and had good location also good support from our defense.”
Clarion scored the game winning walk off on a bunt by freshman catcher Jordan Syfert and she reached on an error by Slippery Rock allowing senior right fielder Elizabeth Shiring to score in the bottom of the 10th leading to a 1-0 win.
The victory snapped the Golden Eagles 56 game winless streak in the PSAC. Powell
Hudson said, “We have been so close all season playing close games and were able to celebrate had a sense of relief.”
In the second game of the doubleheader Baker pitched seven innings strong allowing six hits on three runs while having four strikeouts and walking one.
Hudson said, “Paige threw a great game, she gave up some runs in the early innings but came back from that and settled in.”
Powell went 2-2 with two doubles and sacrifice fly giving her three RBI’s.
Barenchik went 2-4 with a double and a single with an RBI.
Baker recorded her first victory at the collegiate level. Clarion won 6-3 completing the first conference sweep since April 17, 2010 when the Golden Eagles swept Lock Haven.
