CLARION, Pa. –  Clarion University’s economic s organization, the People Encouraging Awareness in Community and Economics, is collecting new and old shoes for the non-profit organization Soles 4 Souls.
Soles 4 Souls was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to fighting poverty through its distribution of shoes and clothing.  According to the Soles 4 Souls website, most of the new items from corporations and retailers are given directly to people who need them in the U.S. and overseas.  PEACE is accepting any type of shoe in any condition for their donation boxes placed around campus.
“Whether they are new or used, we collect them.  Comfortable walking shoes are preferred since most children and adults who are given the shoes do a lot of walking,” Terri-Lynn Clark, president of PEACE, said.  “However, anything that provides some type of protection for the soles of the feet [can be] collected.”
PEACE initially got the idea to start a shoe collection from their adviser Professor Sandra Trejos of the business department. The organization has set a goal of collecting at least 500 pairs of shoes before the collection is through.
“PEACE is always searching for ways to help others, whether it is on the Clarion campus or all around the world. Everyone thought that [Soles 4 Souls] was a great idea and was excited to start.  Two members immediately raised their hands and asked me if they could help.   It was a proud moment for me as the president of the club to see the members so passionate about helping a great cause,” Clark said. “[We] believe that it is important for Clarion to participate in donations like this because it gives the campus a way to come together as a whole to make a positive difference in the lives of others. By bringing everyone together in the spirit of collecting shoes for a good cause, the campus can collectively gain the satisfaction of providing others with a healthier, happier and more prosperous life.”
Donation boxes for Soles 4 Souls are located in Gemmell Student Complex, Carlson Library, Eagle Commons, Still Hall, the Student Recreation Center and all of the residence halls.  Shoes will be collected until March 27.
PEACE is also accepting monetary donations to help with the cost of shipping the shoes to Soles 4 Souls.
