“Vagina Monologues” prepares for annual event

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Keeping with tradition, the Clarion V-Day Project will be putting on the award-winning “Vagina Monologues” this weekend.
The “Monologues” are a series of interviews collected by author Eve Ensler that include the accounts of women of all ages and their different life experiences. The stories range from happy recollections, difficulties that had to be dealt with and memories of violent experiences.
This year senior Paige Shiring and junior Abbey Delaney are directing the show.
For those who have never seen the performances, there may be some confusion of what to expect, a point that Delaney says, “Most people do not go to the “Monologues” because they have no idea what it entails. They don’t understand that it’s stories, not a feminist uprising. When people walk in, not knowing what they are about to see, they normally walk out shocked yet inspired, even men. I want this year’s show to do exactly that.”
There have been some additions to the program that include some new monologues, the involvement of Greek Life and a video segment wherein cast members explain what the monologues mean to them.
“We wanted to add our own spin to the show and really add a personal touch,” Shiring said.
The importance of an event like this is not lost on those who organize it. Shiring said there is a real need for events like the “Monologues.”
“I believe it’s important to host this event because in a culture like ours, where sexual violence is often overlooked and joked about, we need to bring the focus back to the seriousness of it,” said Shiring.
The Vagina Monologues will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 22 and 23. There will also be a 2 p.m. showing on Sunday, Feb. 23. All performances will be held in Hart Chapel.
